MBL MICRO-ECO DISCUSSION GROUP

Meets Thursdays, 2:30-3:30 PM, Lillie 103, unless otherwise stated

MBL Micro-Eco Discussion Group, Fall 2017

Sept. 21: Celebration of summer successes, quick thoughts about moving forward, and ...

Loretta Roberson's update on progress on the active Astrangia poculata project developed last spring.

Loretta would like your input on:

Sharp KH, Pratte ZA, Kerwin AH, Rotjan RD, and Stewart FJ. (2017) Season, but not symbiont state, drives microbiome structure in the temperate coral Astrangia poculata.  Microbiome 5:120.

Sept. 28: Discussion of plan for the semester, and

Elena Lopez Peredo's update on progress on the active invasive and native Gracilaria project developed last spring.

If there is time, Elena would also like your input on:

Fahimipour AK, Kardish MR, Lang JM, Green JL, Eisen JA, Stachowicz JJ (2017) Global-scale structure of the eelgrass microbiome. Applied and Environmental Microbiology 83(12): e03391-16.

If not enough time to discuss Fahimipour et al. on Sept. 28, we'll postpone it until Oct 5, perhaps combining it (for contrast) with:

Ettinger CL, Williams SL, Abbott JM, Stachowicz JJ, and Eisen JA (2017) Microbiome succession during ammonification in eelgrass bed sediments. PeerJ DOI 10.7717/peerj.3674

Oct. 5: Discussion of the two papers listed above (we ran out of time Sept 28!)

Elena Lopez Peredo and Zoe Cardon

Oct. 12: Jessica Mark Welch

Vollmers J, Frentrup M, Rast P, Jogler C and Kaster A-K (2017) Untangling Genomes of Novel Planctomycetal and Verrucomicrobial Species from Monterey Bay Kelp Forest Metagenomes by Refined Binning. Front. Microbiol. 8:472. doi: 10.3389/fmicb.2017.00472

(Supplement at: https://www.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fmicb.2017.00472/full#supplementary-material )

Oct. 19: Everybody! - we sorted papers into "bins" and for next week we'll look at some reviews that fall into those bins (to get the lay of the land).

Oct. 26: Reviews day... Everybody read at least one review (you choose which), and plz go to google doc table and say which one you're reading.
